Thanjavur to Madurai
- Thanjavur, 5:30 AM. Amma has packed enough puliyodharai for forty people. There are six of us.
- Through the Cauvery delta, the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. Rice for the akshathai: sourced locally.
- Tea break number one. The tea master pours from a metre high, mostly to show off.
- Speed breakers: 47. Cows on the road: 12. Times Appa said “almost there”: 63.
- Halfway. The phone rings. Madurai side asks, “கிளம்பிட்டீங்களா?” Have you left? We left three hours ago.
- HORN OK PLEASE, says the lorry. Appa takes it personally.
- Yanaimalai, the hill shaped like a sleeping elephant. Madurai's way of saying “nearly there”.
- Welcome to Madurai, the city that never sleeps. It stayed up specially.
- The maappillai has arrived. Only forty minutes late. A new family record.
